Chapter Thirteen
I headed out shortly after that, leaving the two of them alone in the kitchen. I have no idea whether they stayed there, or whether they headed upstairs for some private time in my mother’s bedroom once I was gone. Nor did I care. That was their business. I had my own business to worry about.
By now it was the middle of the afternoon. Lunch with Shannon had taken time, and then the drive from Nashville to Sweetwater had taken more time. I hadn’t called Rafe to tell him what Shannon had said. I wanted to share the news with him, and I was positively agog to hear what he’d discovered, but I didn’t want to disturb him, and anyway, I was a little worried about what he might have found out.
So while I thought about calling him as I maneuvered the Volvo through the streets of Sweetwater, from the mansion to the town square, I didn’t actually do it. Too much of a chicken.
Walking into Martin & McCall again was like wiping away the last twenty-four hours. Darcy sat the desk in the lobby twirling a brown curl around her finger, and as soon as he heard my voice, Dix’s head popped out of his door farther down the hallway.
“Sis?”
I gave him my best smile. “Hiya, Dix.”
He closed the door behind him and eyed me suspiciously as he came closer. “What are you doing here?”
“Rafe’s in Atlanta,” I said, thinking as I did it that I was getting sick of explaining this. “He didn’t want me to be in Nashville alone. Just in case the murderer got the wrong victim on Saturday, and it was supposed to be me.”
“That’s ridiculous,” Dix said.
“Not according to Rafe.” Although granted, he can be a touch overprotective at times, and especially now, when I had a baby onboard. “I don’t think Grimaldi agrees with him,” I added, fairly. “Anyway, I came down here for a couple of days while he’s away.”
If I had hoped that this little speech would make my brother more kindly disposed toward me, I was disappointed. He was still scowling.
“What are you doing here?”
“Can’t I stop by and visit my favorite brother without you getting all suspicious that I have ulterior motives?”
“No,” Dix said. “And besides, I’m your only brother.”
“That’s probably why you’re my favorite.” I smiled at Darcy, who had followed this exchange. She probably wondered what I was doing there, too. But since it wasn’t any of her business, I turned back to Dix. “Do you have a minute?”
“No,” Dix said. “But I don’t suppose that’ll make a difference to you.”
“Not really. Shall we?” I gestured down the hallway in the direction of his office.
Dix sighed. “Hold my calls, Darcy.”
“Yes, Mr. Martin,” Darcy chirped. I wished Brittany at the LB&A office was as efficient. And then I remembered I didn’t have to worry about Brittany any more.
“I got fired yesterday,” I told Dix when we were sitting on opposite sides of the desk in his office. “I was thinking of suing for wrongful termination.
